A Vinyl Floor Shouldn't Be Covered With Tiles

Many people are putting down tiles over their floors to give it a new look, but this does not come without some serious problems. You could think that this will save you some time and money, but in reality this can make your ceramic floor tiles more prone to breaking when you put them down over an existing vinyl floor. Learn more about why you shouldn’t cover your vinyl flooring with tiles.

Since vinyl and plastic are a very similar than you should figure that it is difficult for your new ceramic tiles to adhere properly to the vinyl flooring. Vinyl has a shiney coats and it is not porous, so this makes it hard for it to bond properly to anything including the glue you use to bond the tiles floors down. Some people will tell you to sand your floors and scratch them up to make it easier, but this does not really work very well.

Since the surfaces won’t stick together this means that you will feel them lifting up after the floor is put down. You may even have to get rid of a whole section of flooring and redo it. You might have to get rid of sections of the tiel floor because the subfloor is unstable and lifts. If you do it right the first time you will save yourself time and money not having to get rid of the old floor later.

You will need a floor that is stable and will not lift when you want to lay down a ceramic floor over a subfloor. A vinyl floor is not the best way to ensure this.

Another reason to consider not laying down a ceramic floor over a vinyl floor is because you will not be able to know how to anchor it properly. This will make your new floor unstable. You may also have problems putting in transitions in spaces that are open and need to be closed up. If you use a new floor or an old one than it will give you a better finished product.

The subfloor used for the tiles is probably not right for your ceramic tiles. You could put the tile down but it might not be wise over vinyl or its subfloor. You could have cracks and other problems because of the cushy flooring. If you start have cracks in even one tile you may have to replace your whole floor which could be very costly. The vinyl can warp and bend and cause your ceramic tile to become unstable.

If you want to leave your vinyl there than take the precautions that you can to make things better for putting down tile. For instance you can screw down the vinyl can help. You can also create a base to make it better for laying down vinyl.
