Airport Parking Options to Get the Best Deal - Where to Park

By: Linda Martin

Getting to the airport before your trip can be hard to figure out. What do you do if you have a morning flight and you don't want to wake up someone at 4 am? There are places to park at airport as well as local off-site services that will shuttle you. In addition there are some shared services that will pick you up at your home and save you money due to sharing the ride with others in the van.

Does short-term parking make sense? This is the most expensive option at the airport but may work well for you if you are away for a few days. Generally it is easy to get to terminal from there and has little hassle.

The long-term parking lot may require you to take a bus or shuttle that runs regularly circling the airport. This is less expensive than the short-term parking lot and may be a good option for you. You do not have to pay for the bus or shuttle because you get that service as part of your parking.

Economy parking is a third option and this is the least expensive but furthest away from the building. It also may be in an uncovered area. Keep in mind that there is a chance that the security of this parking lot may not be 24 hours so it is important to not leave valuable items. Compare prices. You also will receive a bus or shuttle to the airport and back from this parking structure.

Many people forget where they park so remember to write down the aisle number and parking spot number so you can find it. There is nothing worse than returning from vacation and spending an hour walking up and down a parking lot with lots of luggage lost. You may be tired and not having the energy to do this, so forethought is a good idea.

In many cities now you can find an airport transportation service that lets you park in town and will drive you to the airport. They may even heat your car up when you return and offer you a warm drink and newspaper. Enquire about this as it can be a good price.

If you use an off site parking service, check the pricing for sheltered vs non-sheltered parking. See how often they go back and forth to the terminal and if they are a 24 hour service.

An additional airport transportation parking option is to use a shared ride van that many airports have. In Fort Lauderdale, for example, you can pay 15.00 and be picked up from your home and taken to the airport. There are usually 3 or 4 other parties in the car. Depending on the line up you may have to wait a bit or be in van for a while. Still, you can't beat the price.

Think out what works best for you when you travel and how much convenience you need, time you have and the length of your trip. Parking can be expensive so it's important to compare pricing.
