Avoid Overspending At Christmas

By: J Gardener

As Christmas approaches, we can't help but feel the excitement and anticipation of the season, as the decorations go up, and the carols play, and the air turns colder. It's a season of pageantry and parties, lots of good food and fellowship, and renewed relationships with family and friends. Christmas is also the time that Santa Claus makes his annual visit, leaving lots of presents and goodies for all the good boys and girls.

Parents look forward to Santa's visit almost as much as their small children. The delight a child expresses on Christmas morning, when seeing all the presents under the tree, is one of the most fulfilling sights in any parent's life, a moment they'll remember forever. Unfortunately, Santa usually leaves the bill for all that delight squarely in Mom's and Dad's mailboxes, come January.

One of the biggest mistakes many Christmas shoppers make is to hit the malls in December without doing any research. Most parents have a pretty good idea by early December what it is their kids really want for Christmas. As with anything, the most popular toys are going to come at premium prices. Parents need to do just a little investigating, before they head out to the stores, to discover where the best prices are found. Newspapers and the internet are good sources for this kind of information.

The internet can be a good place to shop for kids. Many brick-and-mortar retailers have internet sites with special prices on toys for kids that can't be found in the stores, themselves. Though sales tax can be avoided by buying online, shipping costs can be steep. The best way to buy, online, just as in the concrete world, is to do homework, first, and find the best deals.

Moms and Dads should always remember to take written shopping lists with them, when they hit the malls at Christmastime. A running account of what is spent, along with a total budget that's written out, can be a great tool to have when a parent is tempted to overspend.

One of the most important ways parents can avoid overspending at Christmas is to avoid the temptation of the last-minute shopping run, to pick up a few more little things or stocking-stuffers. When all of the major gifts have been bought, there's really no need to buy kids little extras. They'll probably just wind up under the bed or in the garbage, before January.

Parents should make Christmas as wonderful as they can, without succumbing to the constant pressure they feel to overindulge. Breaking the bank in December won't make you or your kids happier, in the long run. The main thing you'll remember about Christmas, anyway is the love you and your family share, and you can't pay for that.
