Better Guitar Playing From Better Guitar Tuning

By: Lyd M.

Many guitarists that are just starting out will find guitar tuning to be difficult. Guitars are only properly tuned at the factory. Once outside the factory, the wood that makes up the guitar will start to lose its shape slowly due to forces of nature like expansion and contraction. The guitar strings will start to loosen up. Therefore, ensure that you tune your guitar properly before you carry on with your guitar practice. Here are some tips that will ease guitar tuning for you.

1. Habit

Even though getting your guitar tuned correctly is difficult, once you have made guitar tuning into a habit it will become easier for you. When your guitar is tuned properly, you are able to spot the mistakes that you have made and can then improve on them. A properly tuned guitar will make the whole process of learning the guitar a breeze.

2. Piano

There are many different ways to approach guitar tuning and one of the ways is to tune the guitar by using another instrument like the piano. When you use this method, you're tuning your guitar by ear using a different instrument that can play the relevant guitar notes for you. So when you are tuning your guitar, you are trying to make, for example, the E note on your guitar sound the same as the E note on the piano. Once you think they sound the same, you do the same for the other strings.

3. Tuner

Another way is to use a battery operated tuner. Start off with the Low E, which is the thickest string on the guitar. Strike the string and adjust the tightness of the string with the tuning peg until the green light shines. Do the same until the G string. This is where you match the B string with the 4th fret of the G string. Once you have managed to do the same for all the six strings, you have successfully tuned your guitar. If your guitar has a tremolo bridge, always remember that each string that you tune will go down in pitch as you tune the next string.

Before playing any music, even your warm-up, it is important to make sure that your guitar is in tune. You will not notice it in the beginning but keep in mind that the more you practice your guitar tuning, the more your ear becomes trained. Soon, you will be able to pick up on nuances in your guitar tuning.
